Norm
MacDonald From
"Saturday Night Live"
Perhaps best known for his offbeat delivery
of "the fake news" on "Saturday Night Live"
for five seasons, Norm MacDonald continues to be a major
comedic presence. Aside from his notable characterizations
of Bob Dole and Burt Reynolds on “SNL,” MacDonald
proved that his acerbic wit and writing were not to be
contained to just the small screen. He starred in and
co-wrote the film Dirty Work, and provided the voice of
Lucky the Dog in Dr. Doolittle. Macdonald also had roles
in Billy Madison with Adam Sandler and in The People Vs.
Larry Flint.
MacDonald’s other feature film projects
include Screwed and the 1999 Andy Kaufman biopic Man on
the Moon, and he also served as a writer for the hit ABC
series “Roseanne.” He continues to regularly
tour the country performing his popular stand-up comedy.
David Alan Grier From
Comedy Central's "Chocolate News"
After a succession of movie character roles and TV
guest spots, David Alan Grier was cast in Keenan Ivory Wayans' tribute
to the "Blaxploitation" film I'm Gonna Git You Sucka.
Soon after, Grier became one of the original ensemble players on
Wayans' TV series "In Living Color.” Grier's memorable
characterizations for the landmark series include Antoine Merriwether,
the non-bald half of the "Men On..." sketches and a less
than kind impression of Muhammad Ali.
Grier’s many film credits include Jumanji, the film adaptation
of the TV show Bewitched and the 80s cult classic Amazon Women From
the Moon. He also had a notable role in writer-director-star Mario
Van Peebles' "Baadassss!" and has guest-starred on numerous
television shows including “Premium Blend” and “Crank
Yankers” on Comedy Central, “Letterman,” and “MadTV.”
Most recently, David Alan Grier stars as the host of the new show
“Chocolate News” on Comedy Central.

Sketchfest Presents: The
SF Sketchfest Comedy Writing Award
Robert
Smigel in conversation with Dana Carvey
SF Sketchfest is honored to present its first ever
Comedy Writing Award to Saturday Night Live, TV Funhouse and Dana
Carvey Show scribe Robert Smigel, who will be joined by frequent
collaborator Dana Carvey for a conversation and Q&A. Smigel
first established himself as a writer on Saturday Night Live when
Lorne Michaels returned as executive producer for the 1985-1986
season. Smigel wrote many memorable sketches, including Bill Swerkski’s
Superfans (Da Bears!) and one where host William Shatner urged worshipful
attendees at a Star Trek convention to "get a life."
Smigel later became the first head writer at Late
Night with Conan O'Brien, where he created numerous successful comedy
bits, including one where Smigel performed only the lips of public
figures which were superimposed on photos of the actual people (Bill
Clinton and Arnold Swarzenegger proving the most fertile go-to characters).
Smigel's most famous creation, however, is the foul-mouthed puppet
Triumph, the Insult Comic Dog, who mercilessly mocks celebrities
and others in the style of a Borscht Belt comedian. Smigel also
wrote and performed on the short-lived Dana Carvey Show.
Smigel continued to establish himself on Saturday
Night Live by producing infamous, provocative, short animated segments
under the title TV Funhouse, which usually satirizes public figures
and popular culture. It spawned a TV show on Comedy Central featuring
a mix of puppets, animation, and short sketches. Although only eight
episodes were aired (during the winter of 2000 - 2001) Smigel continued
to create TV Funhouse segments for Saturday Night Live and occasionally
appears in films (usually alongside SNL veterans such as Adam Sandler).

Pack and Dayle

"Celebrity Autobiography: In Their Own Words"
is the brainchild of Eugene Pack. As Pack explains, "I would
listen to a lot of books-on-tape, particularly autobiographies,
and was astounded at what people would write about. If I got a hold
of one of the books, I'd read it out loud to a friend, and they'd
insist I was making it up….but people actually wrote these
words. I thought that putting the material up in front of an audience
would be extremely entertaining."
One night, Pack had access to a comedy space and
asked a group of fellow performers and comedians to bring in excerpts
of autobiographies that were not necessarily written to be funny.
The evening was an instant success---and it soon became a monthly
performance piece, co-hosted and co-produced by Dayle Reyfel. After
covering over 300 different bios, "In Their Own Words"
is never short of material because every week, someone else has
written their life story!
SF Sketchfest welcomes co-creators Eugene Pack and
Dayle Reyfel, and guest orators Michael McKean (This is Spinal Tap),
Annette O’Toole (Smallville), Rachel Dratch (Saturday Night
Live), Will Forte (Saturday Night Live), Jason Sudeikis (Saturday
Night Live), Scott Thompson (The Kids in the Hall) and Laraine Newman
(Saturday Night Live).

Comic Standing” and is a series regular on VH-1’s “Best

“Last Comic Standing,” and has appeared on shows including

Born in Queens and raised on Long Island, Dave Attell
got into stand-up comedy in the late eighties after graduating from
New York University with a degree in Film and Television. After
many years working the open mic circuit in Manhattan, Attell worked
his way up through the club scene onto the road, touring across
America as a national headliner and developing a huge following
among fans and the industry alike.
Dave Attell was named one of the “25 Funniest
People in America” by Entertainment Weekly Magazine. His caustic
wit, rapid-fire delivery and his choice of material that can best
be described as "very adult" has earned him the reputation
as a "comic's comic." In 2001, Attell used this love of
booze and laughter to create and host the hit series, "Insomniac
with Dave Attell,” which ran until 2004 on Comedy Central.
Attell has made numerous appearances on “The
Late Show with David Letterman,” “The Tonight Show with
Jay Leno,” “Late Night with Conan O'Brien,” “The
Howard Stern Show,” “Later with Carson Daly” and
“The Daily Show with Jon Stewart”. He also appeared
in Chris Rock’s cult film "Pootie Tang,” on Comedy
Central’s "Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn" and in
his own half-hour stand-up special "Comedy Central Presents
Dave Attell.”

Paula
Poundstone Star
of multiple HBO specials and a Cable Ace Award winner
Paula Poundstone is famous for her razor-sharp
wit and spontaneity. Her first one-hour HBO special, “Cats,

starred in a self-titled talk show series on HBO for which she
won her second Cable ACE Award.
In 1992, Poundstone filed memorable field commentary
of the Presidential Election for the “Tonight Show with
Jay Leno.” This led to her own show on ABC, aptly named,
“The Paula Poundstone Show,” and behind-the-scenes
coverage of that year’s EMMY Awards. Paula’s first
book, There’s Nothing In This Book That I Meant To Say,
is part memoir, part monologue, and features biographies of
legendary historical figures including Abraham Lincoln, Joan

exploded after the success of the first season of “Last
Comic Standing.” Long-time fans of Ralphie were joined
by countless new fans when America thought he was robbed of
the winner’s title. Despite the show’s outcome,
Ralphie’s special brand of comedy combines the familiar
elements of hip-hop and topical comedy with a dash of southern
down-home flavor and quick wit, making him one of the most popular
comedians in the country. His first DVD, appropriately titled
“Just Correct,” went platinum!
His special brand of humor and incredible timing
has allowed Ralphie to cross social, cultural, and ethnic barriers
and has earned him roles in such films as “For Da Love
of Money” and “Gas.” Ralphie has worked as
an actor, writer and producer on ESPN's “Mohr Sports”
starring Jay Mohr and made multiple appearances on “The
Late Late Show with Craig Kilborn” and “Jimmy Kimmel

to receive this honor.
